I put together this list of best toys for 1 year olds based on what helped our son to develop his fine motor skills and problem solving skills.
When you come home from the hospital with your brand new baby you usually have all the necessary items to take care of your baby. Then something happens. At about 5-7 months they start crawling. This quickly moves into walking, and before you know it your newborn is a year old and you have no idea what toys are appropriate for them.
L was my first and outside of babysitting during my teenage years I had no idea what to do with a 1 year old. I was at a complete loss about what to get him that could help him hit milestones.
I spent hours scouring Amazon and browsing isles at Target or Walmart trying to find the right toys for L. We tried a lot of different things with him and we found these 11 toys to be the ones he played with the most.
Educational Toys For 1 Year Old
Since every child grows at different paces and develops differently these toys are suitable for kids from about 6 months through a year and half or two years. It all depends on where your child is in their development process.
Remember, you can always purchase toys sooner than necessary and introduce them to your child a couple of times until they are ready for it. We did that with our son and it really helped to give him new and exciting toys to play with.
All these toys are geared towards helping your child recognize patterns, colors, numbers, letters, and help them with their motor skills. Some of these toys will also help your child to build on their problem solving skills as well.
Affordable Toys For 1 Year Old
Babies and children grow so fast it can be hard to spend any type of significant money on new toys. Especially when you just know that your child is going to be bored with the toy in a couple of months.
When I was looking for toys I also looked at the price tag and I weighed the price with the use I could get out of the toy. I was always asking, “would this provide months of healthy stimulation and could it age into other uses?”
Some products absolutely did that, some did not. For those that didn’t the price was cheap enough that I didn’t really mind spending the money to get just a couple of months of use before it was past where he was developmentally.
As for the products that did last, they lasted for a year or more before my son grew tired of them.

Stacking cups are a fantastic toy that can be used for several years. L liked using them for stacking for a long time, then we used them to identify colors, then he started using them as a prop in his playtime.
Speaking of towers, my son loves his mega bloks. We purchased them for him when he was about 9 months old. He’s been building towers, identifying colors, and playing with them ever since. Blocks are just one of those toys that kids absolutely adore and will play with for a long period of time.
Now that L is 4 we use mainly Duplos though he will be moving on to normal LEGOs pretty soon.

I’m sure you remember you had something similar to this when you were a kid. There are certain toys that are still some of the best toys for development. The block sorter set is a great way to teach your child about shapes and colors while also helping them to learn to match shapes and develop those fine motor skills.
L loved this little car driver toy. He liked the turning, clicking, and sounds that the toy made. He even liked mimicking what sounds were made too. This is a great toy but beware of over stimulation due to the different noises and lights.
This is another toy straight out of your own childhood, but again it’s fantastic for development skills. Not only can your child learn about colors and stacking, but this toy helps them to learn about sizes.
L got this train for his 1st birthday from his grandma. It was super educational, helped him to be mobile and provided hours of entertainment. He really enjoyed pushing his train and playing with the accompanying blocks that teach letters and sounds.
L was always extremely interested in our bright and shiny cell phones. So when we got him is own he was super excited. This phone went through a beating though and worked well for about 1 year and a half. He enjoyed playing with it and pressing the screen for new sounds.
This was one of the first toys that was ever given to L. He loved this toy and played with it for about 2 years. He learned about shapes and sounds while keeping him occupied. We finally had to give it away when he started using it as a step stool to climb onto furniture he wasn’t supposed to be on.
L really enjoyed playing with this toy because it would sing and teach about different colors. It’s a great plushy toy perfect for young babies. Though, beware, as a parent the music might become a bit tiresome.

Using Toys For 1 Year Old Development
Baby’s, infants, and toddlers all learn better through play. Toys that are purely educational are great but your baby needs more than just educational. They need to build their fine motor skills, their imagination, and even have physical play.
So teach your baby to scootch and crawl by placing a toy just out of reach. Help them learn to sit on their own by sitting behind them and playing. Teach them soft, hard, or how to pretend they are talking on the phone. These are all things that your child will need to know.
