At the beginning of this year I went through a pretty bad brain fog. Luckily, I’ve been through this before. If you have ever had those days where your mind is in a fog I have a few tricks to declutter your mind and get you back on track.
Brain fog happens when you have a lot on your mind. You either have too much information you are processing, or a lot going on in your life that you just feel off.
One of the biggest symptoms of brain fog is forgetfulness. This usually hits me in the grocery store. I get home and realize forgot to get baby wipes, sugar, or some random item. What’s worse is when the item I forgot was the main purpose of going to the store in the first place.
In the best cases the fog lifts after a day or two. In worse cases the fog can last for weeks or months. There are a lot of differently ways you can organize your thoughts and get rid of the fog.
Start writing in a journal. Journaling can be a powerful way to get all your thoughts down in one place.
By writing down all your thoughts you are essentially clearing out your mind. Journaling can be great for clearing your mind on a daily basis. If used at night it can lead to better sleep as well.

To Do Lists
While I’ve never been a fan of traditional to do lists if you create a list that has no due by date it can lead to a clearer mind and better productivity. Clearing your mind of everything to be done will go a long way to prioritizing and accomplishing more.
Create your no due date to do list and start tackling each task one at a time. Don’t focus on that needs to be done, focus on the task at hand.
Turn on some soft music or use a guided meditation on YouTube and meditate for a little bit. When you sit and focus on a mantra or on your breathing you are giving your brain a chance to relax.
This makes it easier to organize your thoughts. Clearing your mind for 20-30 minutes goes a long way to clearing the brain fog.

Talk It Out
Just like with journaling, talking can go a long way to decluttering your brain. Get on the phone with your best friend and have a gab sessions. Just talk it all out. Talking through everything that has your brain in a fog can help to clear and organize your thoughts.
Take a Break
I know it seems counterproductive to take a break when there is so much to be done, however, taking a break can actually improve your productivity.
The Pomodoro Technique works for a lot of people. It revolves around working for a set time and then taking a 5 minute break, work for a set time, take another 5 minute break. After 3 sets of work you stop at take a 20 minute break.
A lot of people see great results and better productivity with this method.

That’s right turn up the jams and just get lost in music. Music doesn’t visually pull you away but provides great background noise to get work done.
In our home we often times put on a 4 hour inspirational music soundtrack while we work. Even right now as it plays I am working right through writing this post without distractions. Additionally, my son loves the music and it helps to keep him calm.
Have Some Play Time
Play time can be anything from running outside with your kids, playing cards, playing video games, to coloring. Spend some time focused on getting energy out or focusing your brain on something other than what is causing your fog.
As a painter I found that painting was a fantastic way to declutter my mind because I was focusing solely on the task at hand. When I was finished I was able to organize my thoughts more clearly.

Sometimes you just need a good old fashion brainstorm session to declutter your mind. So sit down with a notebook and pen and start writing everything that is flooding through your brain.
There doesn’t need to be any type of order just everything you have stored and need to organize. After you dump all your thoughts, important information, and tasks on paper then you can organize them to task lists, calendars, or journals.
Create a Plan of Action
If you are flooding with ideas, don’t know where to start, and it’s causing a brain fog try creating a plan of action. Look at the ideas, decide which ones are the better ones to start with then narrow it down further.
Create a step by step plan. While like a to do list, this is best done for projects. This way you can write out your actions and then complete them one at a time to finish your project.
Clean Your House
I find that when I have loads of work to get done that’s when I will be distracted by absolutely everything else in the house and come down with brain fog. First thing in the morning after you wake up, clean your house.
As a work at home mom a clean house goes a long way into keeping me on track and keeping fog far away from my brain.

Brain fog happens to everyone and it can be a frustrating experience. To avoid brain fog all together try to stay on schedule and stay as organized as possible. Organization is the biggest key to staying out of a fog and keeping your mind free from clutter.
