The moment you have a child your entire life seems to just fill up with noise. Between all the noises that come out of your child and all the noises their toys make you are surrounded by noise. Lucky for you I have tested some cool toys for boys that are silent. Furthermore, they aren’t just for boys. Your little girl will love them too.
It’s certainly not uncommon for parents to want quiet play time for their kids. Quiet play time helps to encourage imagination and build motor skills. It also helps parents to get just a few minutes of peace and quiet.
Another key reason to needing quiet time toys is it’s less stimulating. Over stimulation can lead to frustration and emotional outbursts. Quiet toys prevent over stimulation because their senses aren’t being overloaded.
Imagine for a moment that you have no idea what something is and it suddenly starts playing music, flashing lights, and vibrating. You may be feel a bit overwhelmed by that. While we see the buttons teach numbers or shapes, your child has no idea what those buttons are for just that they make the toy do lots of interesting stuff.
Over stimulation can cause overwhelm in your child which is why you need quiet toy play time. I’ve listed some of the best toys that are quiet below.
Cool Toys for Boys
We received this tunnel as a gift off our Amazon wish list for L one Christmas. Holy cow this tunnel is awesome. It’s been actively played with for about 5 months now and still holding together strong.
The tunnel is blue, yellow, and red. It’s about 6 feet long and folds up nicely. The tunnel ties and slides into a sleeve that keeps it secure. When in the sleeve it’s about a foot and a half wide and about 2 inches thick. So it can easily slide under a bed, in a drawer, or into the closet for easy storage.
Overall I give this tunnel a 5 out of 5 stars for it’s compactness and fun.
Update: We got 2 years of play out of this tunnel before it was time to get rid of it. There was a small tear after 2 full years of almost daily use. We could have easily fixed the tear but instead decided to get rid of it instead as we were preparing to move. I would absolutely buy this tunnel again.
Christmas 2019 my husband and I decided to get our son this play tent. While the tent itself is pretty large it’s proven to be a pretty great investment for our son. He likes to lie in there with books and toys and play. He currently has the majority of his stuffed animals inside the tent too.
The tent is almost 5 foot by 5 foot so make sure you have a good place to put it. All three of us and our two cats easily fit inside this tent. I like that he will be able to grow into the tent for the next couple of years.
This is also a great toy for him to crawl into and decompress at times when he just needs some quiet time.
We love Mega Bloks in this house. They are a must have toy for any child. It helps them with some pretty important skills throughout most of toddlerdom.
L was about 9 months old when we first got Mega Bloks. At that age he looked at them and turned them over in his hands. By 1 year he was learning to stack the blocks and build towers.
With all the bright colors we used them to teach him all the different colors. We ask where is the blue block and he hands us the blue block.
When it comes to storage they come in a bag with handle and zipper. L first learned to use zippers with this bag which helped with zipping up his coat later.
The big blocks still hurt like hell when you step on them. Be careful of these landmines when they are strewn all over your living room, which will happen. When put away in the bag they easily fit in the corner of a room or next to shelves.
Overall I give Mega Bloks a 5 out of 5 stars for versatility in education and fun quiet play time.
Update: The Megabloks worked wonderfully for almost 3 years but when my son turned four we decided to graduate him up to Duplo blocks from Lego. He’s been playing with those for about a year now and I will say they are perfect. There are some smaller pieces that come with Duplo kits so I would recommmend you wait until they are 3 or 4 before purchasing them. This kit is perfect for toddlers though.
My mother bought L his first crayons and coloring books. Coloring quickly became one of his favorite activities.
Rob and I both work inside the home and at times we need to finish writing a blog post or finish some research. I will often times set Lucas up at his small table and chair with coloring books and crayons. Sometimes I’ll get a good 20 minutes of quiet play before he wants to do something else. Those 20 minutes are extremely helpful in completing a task.
We first started coloring with the smaller normal crayons until my mom found the jumbo crayons. I highly recommend the jumbo crayons for younger children 3 and under as they are easier to control in their hands. Plus they don’t break as easily as the smaller ones.
For Coloring I give a 4 out of 5 stars. It may not hold L’s attention as long as the Mega Bloks but it’s a fun quiet activity that can be done independently or together.
Birthday shopping for a two year old that isn’t speaking is extremely difficult. Two is a hard age to buy for as it is. So we decided we would take $30 and go to Toys R Us. We walked through the store picking out different toys and showing them to Lucas.
We found the Safari animals and L held onto it and didn’t let go. For days afterwards he would carry the container around all over the house.
He would set everything up on his dad’s desk or on the trunk we use as a coffee table. L loves the safari animals and trees.
We sit with him often and name the different animals and make the animal sounds with them. He started mimicking those sounds when playing with the animals which made for a pretty big milestone for our speech delayed toddler.
I give the Safari Animals a 4 out of 5 stars. While great for play together to turn it into an educational experience due to some smaller pieces and the customization of the trees it’s better if not played independently with your toddler.
Update: L is 4 now and he still plays with these safari animals they have been a fantastic toy to keep L entertained. Some of the trees have broken over time and with play and while our original set is no long available I did find a similar one with great reviews here.
I’m a bit of a geek an still love dinosaurs. So this past Christmas we added some toy dinosaurs to the Amazon Wish List for L. Sure enough we got them.
Rob quotes Firefly (it’s a sci-fi show that we love) while playing with L with the dinosaurs. While they are not super great for independent play they still make for educational toys. He learns the difference between carnivores and herbivores, which makes Rob extremely happy.
While I haven’t quite figured out everything that L is playing and pretending about; he is pretending while playing with the dinosaurs. This helps build some pretty important skills for later which makes me very happy.
The dinosaurs also came with a book which from time to time Lucas will want read to him. This is another great educational tool for my two year old.
Overall I give the dinosaurs a 4 out of 5 stars for their great educational purpose but lack of independent play at this age.
Update: These dinosaurs have held up well over the years and my son still plays with them. He especially likes mixing them with his safari animals.
