How I Clean My Floors Fast

A vacuum is a vacuum is a vacuum right? Not really. For years I have swept the dust, hair, and other debri from my hard flooring onto my carpet then vacuum my carpet. There is one vacuum that I have not had to do this with.

First off, I was a big Dirt Devil fan since I first lived on my own. A ridiculously cheap vacuum bought 10 years ago lasted me for the longest time. Well, we got rid of our favorite Dirt Devil a little over a year ago because we downsized.

I was so sad to see that vacuum go but I knew I could get another one like it at Walmart for cheap as soon as we settled in. Plus the vacuum was 10 years old and I was positive their vacuums would get better with time, right? Wrong.

We moved, settled in, went to Walmart and bought a new Dirt Devil vacuum. It was not getting the job done. I have a toddler and two cats, I bought a pet hair vacuum and it still wasn’t getting my carpets clean.

Additionally, the entire vacuum felt like it was made of super cheap plastic. I had to duct tape the extendable handle back into the vacuum just so I could use it. That’s ridiculous.

Then I got my hands on a Shark Navigator. I was in cleaning heaven at the first use of this bad boy.

The Shark Vacuum

While a bit more expensive than what I’m used to spending on a vacuum cleaner I was a little put off by the price. Over $100 for a vacuum just seemed like a lot to me after having a decent Dirt Devil that was a $50 vacuum but got the work done.

Being super disappointed in my new Dirt Devil and the cheap plastics and parts that didn’t work I decided to give the more expensive vacuum with great reviews a shot. I could not have been more pleased.

How It Works On Hardwood And Tile Floors

Even with my awesome old Dirt Devil I would have to sweep the floor because the air circulation on it always pushed hair and debri away from the vacuum on hard flooring.

This does not happen with the Shark Vacuum. Simply flip the on switch to the first setting and the brushes stay off. I run that vacuum over my hardwood and tile flooring with ease.

It picks up everything in its path instead of blowing it out of the way. It picks up small and large pieces of debris easily.

I think what I love most is the swivel on this vacuum. It slides and gets under the cabinets easily and it has edge to edge suction.

The Wand Extension

The handle stays in place until you are ready to use it on it’s own to get high up cobwebs or really deep clean those baseboards.

Just press the red tab in the back and release the handle with ease. There are even further extensions that can be used to clean fabric, blinds, curtains, and lamp shades. Or a thinner extension that makes getting under your stove and fridge a lot easier.

When you have cats in a home you get used to their hair ending up just everywhere so it’s important to have a vacuum with powerful suckage.

The Shark Navigator has that. So after I am done cleaning my house I know that my clothes and my carpets will be cat hair free. At least for a few minutes until they shed more. Any pet owner knows it doesn’t always last.

How It Works On Carpet

For the most part the Shark runs smoothly over carpeting and doesn’t require a lot of heavy pushing or dragging. There is an exception to this and I’ll get to in the next section.

On medium pile carpeting it picks up things with ease, even stuck and dried playdoh. This is a huge plus for me.

With a preschooler running around the house I need a vacuum that is as tough as he is. It needs to pick up small pieces of paper, cat hair, dried play doh, and other miscellaneous debri.

It needs to grab crumbs or food that gets trampled on or rubbed into carpet. You turn your back for two minutes to wash a load of dishes while he snacks next thing you know cheerios are being smashed into the carpeting.

This vacuum seemed to be the best for tackling anything my son could throw at the carpet.

Shag Carpet Humidity Pitfall

Until we moved into a duplex with super plush thick shag carpet. It’s dark brownish red so it hides stains really well which is a plus, but it’s a bit of a pain to clean.

When we first moved in it was Spring, humidity was low, and the vacuum worked like a charm. Then summer hit.

Of course we are an open windows all the time type of family so as it got hot it also got humid and that humidity was also sitting in our home.

Suddenly, the vacuum felt like I was pushing it through mud. This really upset me. It’s supposed to be a great vacuum and I paid quite a bit for it and it became super difficult to use.

I lowered the suction power a bit and that seemed to help but now I had to go over the same spot several times to make sure it got all the cat hair, dropped food, or play doh debris.

Then on came the air and the humidity was zapped out of the house. The vacuum suddenly worked just fine on the super plush shag carpets.

All winter long it worked just fine. Then again this year as soon as it got a little bit humid the vacuum felt heavy and like I was pushing it through mud.

I’m partial to believe it’s just the carpeting. Overall its usefulness on the hard flooring makes this vacuum really worth it but if you have shag carpeting and the windows open on a humid day, you might find it difficult to move.

All The Reasons Why I Love My Shark Vacuum

The swivel, the edge to edge suction, the ability to turn off the brush and tackle hard flooring, the handle extender, the sturdiness are all reasons why I love the Shark Navigator Lift Away Deluxe vacuum. It’s lightweight, gets the job done well, and tackles our biggest messes.

Sure the vacuum has issues going through shag carpeting during humid summer months but from what I can tell most vacuums seem to have this issue. It’s a small issue and in our next home I’ll just make sure the carpet is medium pile or all hard flooring instead of shag carpeting.
