How To Create A Homeschool Space In Your Home

This year we started preschool at home. We got the educational materials, we set a schedule, and we got all our supplies. Something was missing though. We needed a homeschool station.

We discussed several different options for our homeschool station. We thought about putting it in my office – which is technically the dining room. There was one option of putting it in his bedroom. But ultimately neither of these places felt like the right choice for our home layout and his needs.

We decided to set him up in our living room instead. He would be close enough for me to keep an eye on him and make sure we was doing his work. Plus, we had an empty corner in our living room that needed something in it.

It would actually free up space in his room so he could play more easily too. With his desk and easel both coming out to the living room he now had more space in his bedroom.

Homeschool Decor

Back in my day we homeschooled at the kitchen table or at our parents desk. Seeing that we don’t have a kitchen table – it’s a clutter magnet in our home if we have one – and that my desk is always used for work, it just wouldn’t work out for us.

Homeschool decor goes beyond just setting up an easel and a desk though. We wanted to really bring in the classroom feel into our son’s homeschool area. Lucky for us, Amazon had most of what we needed to decorate and make our homeschool decor really stand out.

Must Haves For Homeschool Room

There are a few things that you want to have in your homeschool room or space. These things like it easier to teach and give your kids the feeling of being in an “office” of their own.

I highly recommend having a good desk. This kid’s desk is similar to the one we own. Besides the possible need for a computer because of online schooling options, your kid is going to need a place to practice all their work.

I also recommend having this easel. This makes teaching easier instead of wasting notepad after notepad. It’s also a great tool for your child to use to practice writing, numbers, math, and any other number of educational activities.

Homeschool Wall Decor

For wall decor I decided to keep it simple for now. We set up a emotions chart because that’s a big priority in what our son needs to learn. His emotions are big and dramatic at times so giving him a place where he can identify his emotions is important.

We also have this Melissa and Doug magnet planner. He can learn about the days of the week, months, years, and events with this planner. It hangs nicely on the wall and he can easily move the magnets himself.

I personally use the wall decor to start our day off. We first identify how we are feeling in that moment then we plan out our day. After that we get started on our curriculum.

Homeschool Decorating Ideas

When it comes to decorating your homeschool space it all comes down to exactly what you are looking to do with the space. Below are some of the options I considered or are still considering adding to our own homeschool space.

Telling Time Teaching Clock

This clock is so important as you start teaching your kid how to tell time. While our son has learned to start looking at the clock for things that are being timed most of the clocks are digital. I still think it’s important for him to learn how to tell time on a regular clock too.

Hanging Crafts

I haven’t figured out if I can actually utilize this or not because the crafts would get hung in a different area of our home. If we had a dedicated homeschool room I would get this to hang crafts all around the room.

Parts Of Speech Chart

This parts of speech chart would be useful and with my son’s speech delay we can better teach him parts of conversation. With our new preschool schedule my son’s speech delay is getting better everyday and he’s much better with actually wanting to communicate with us. This would be just another tool I could use to help.

Educational Posters

This set of educational posters has everything we need for our preschooler. While he’s already got 1-30 down, and all his letters, his shapes and seasons could use some work. Educational posters are a fantastic way to reinforce what he’s learning right now.

Solar System Poster

I love this poster but unfortunately do not have a wall that can hold the entire thing. I like how it displays all the planets – except for Pluto who really wanted to be a planet. Plus it displays facts about each planet. While it might be a bit of an advanced topic for a preschooler it never hurts to start them on outer space fascination early.

Math Bingo Printables

These Math Bingo printables are a great way to help you kid memorize their multiplication tables and order of operations. It’s a helpful tool that adds a bit of fun to the school day.

K-5 Educational Posters

Next year I will be purchasing this educational poster pack as we explore more topics. It’s perfect for reinforcing and introducing new topics in your child’s homeschooling education.

Fruit and Vegetable Posters

My son is a picky eater, so I’m hoping that being able to identify different vegetables and fruits he might get curious and actually try them. When you have a picky eater you try anything to spark interest in new foods.

Over The Door File Organizer

I want this so that I can easily file projects, tests, and papers through homeschooling. While I’m not sure that I will need it for this year I know in the future I will.

Homeschool Room Decor

Just like having an office when you work from home makes separating your home life from your work life easier, having a homeschool space provides the same. Decorating that space with helpful posters and charts just reinforces what they are learning in their studies.

If you are lucky enough to have an extra room you can turn into a homeschool room try chalkboard paint on your walls. Paint it fun colors too. The space should be one that your child actually likes going to because it helps them to build a lifelong love of learning.
