Today, I’m giving you a Fractured Freedom book review after finishing my first book by Shain Rose. Going in I knew this was a brother’s best friend story but otherwise didn’t know much about the story. I have a habit of going into books mostly blind.

As usual I will try to keep spoilers to a minimum however, like with all of my reviews, there may be a few small spoilers.

“I don’t know why we’ve been ignoring the inevitable. You’re my lamb. I’m your wolf. It’s about time I stop letting others play with my food.”

Shain Rose, Fractured Freedom

Fractured Freedom is a brother’s best friend contemporary romance and does cover topics that may be triggering. I will have a full list of triggers below but for quick reference miscarriage, drugs, anxiety and depression are often brought up in this book.

Trigger Warnings

Since we don’t always get trigger warnings on books I like to give trigger warnings in my reviews. This can help people avoid certain triggers that could hurt their mental well being.

Possible Triggers in this book are:

  • Alcohol
  • Anxiety
  • Assault
  • Death
  • Depression
  • Drugs (Addiction, Recovery, Selling)
  • Gun Violence
  • Kidnapping
  • Miscarriage
  • Murder
  • Pregnancy
  • Profanity
  • Sexual Assault
  • Sexually Explicit Scenes
  • Violence

For a list of the triggers I look for you can check out this link here. This may or may not be a complete list of triggers for this book, I do my best to make sure I mark anything that could be a potential trigger but I may accidentally miss triggers.

Fractured Freedom Synopsis

Dante Reid is her brother’s best friend and Delilah might have tricked him into taking her virginity. Shortly afterwards she grows distant and now he’s left wondering what happened. Years later in a mistaken identity with her twin sister he bails her out of jail. Now that he has a chance to be close to her again he’s taking it. He wants answers to why she suddenly disappeared from his life.

This was my first book from Shain Rose and I enjoyed this book a lot. I’ve already added another one of her books to my TBR and I hope to read it in August though I may have already filled my must read list for the month. If this next book is as good or better than this one, I will likely be reading everything she’s written.

Fractured Freedom Reading Experience

Like I had previously mentioned I went into Fractured Freedom mostly blind to what the story was about. I didn’t expect there would be a few tears, happy moments, and so much freaking heat between the main characters.

The story had so many twists and turns, I loved the family that was in this, and I enjoyed the background story for Dante a lot. It was something I hadn’t quite seen done before and I don’t want to spoil it. I found it super interesting though.

This doesn’t even cover how mental health and trauma are dealt with in this book. As someone who deals with anxiety and depression I love seeing it in the fiction I read, especially when it’s done this well.

The story was well written and while there were scenes that were a little meh, I enjoyed the story overall and look forward to reading more by this author.

Fractured Freedom Book Review

Dante was an interesting character with an interesting background. While there were times that his possessiveness and his tough guy personality was a bit in your face I enjoyed this character. I did feel that he changed a lot based on who he was in the beginning of the book, but he also grew up some and went through a lot.

I loved Delilah though. Her story is one that I can easily relate to on some level. Watching her focus on herself and going through a healing process was absolutely something that I loved seeing. However, there were some scenes where the character says some things that I feel were wrong thoughts to have.

With depression and anxiety we can sometimes convince ourselves of something that is not true and it can cause us to spiral. So I’m going to go with that being the explanation behind some of the more confusing topics and thought processes that she had.

This book does have a happy ending and I did feel that the author did a fantastic job about addressing mental health in these books and how it’s often a lifelong struggle for some of us. We have good days, we have bad days, but we learn how to cope and take care of ourselves. Hopefully, we have someone we can lean on to help with that process.

Star Rating

Before I rate this book I want to give you a bit of background about what my rankings mean. I typically read books that I check out through the Libby app with my local library or through Kindle Unlimited.

I rarely buy ebooks unless they are cheaply priced or on sale. I also very rarely buy physical copies of books. I’m a bit of a minimalist so I have to absolutely adore a book to buy a physical copy that will be proudly displayed in my home.

So my ranking system is as follows:

  • 5 Stars equals I am buying a physical copy of this book. I will read this book at least 10 more times, it is the best ever.
  • 4 stars equals a great book. I might buy an ebook version when it’s on sale so that I can re-read it at least one more time.
  • 3 stars equals a good book. I likely won’t read again but I appreciate the story.
  • 2 stars equals “Meh.” I will not read this book again, it had a lot of problems and I did not care for it.
  • 1 star equals a bad book. I barely finished this book and I will never recommend anyone waste valuable book reading time on this book.
  • 0 stars is a did not finish book. I will never finish that book and it is banished.

Fractured Freedom got 4 stars, 4 spice, and 1 tissue. While I wish that Dante was a bit more believable as a dominant male I enjoyed his story immensely. I really enjoyed Delilah’s character, her trauma and growth from that trauma was beautifully done.

Final Thoughts on Fractured Freedom

As I stated before there are some deeper subjects that are covered in these books that could be triggering so please go through the trigger list before reading. I really did enjoy this book and while I may have only needed one tissue for it others may need more. This book is could be catharsis for those who have struggled with miscarriages, addictions, depression or anxiety.
