The Mom bun, it’s a staple for most moms. However, always sporting the same top knot at the top of your head can leave your hair broken and cause headaches. So I went looking for some new mom bun styles that kept the hair out of my face. I found these 10 ways to style a mom bun.

To keep your hair healthy always detangle your hair with a wide tooth comb first before you brush your hair. Brushing your hair without first detangling it can lead to broken hair and split ends.

I also use the Goody Ouchless hair ties on my super thick hair. While every now and then one will break they don’t pull out my hair when I go to remove them and that’s a big plus.

To help keep your hair from breaking switch up your style each day. This prevents weakening the same spot in your hair over time. Try to wear your hair down as often as you can too. On the days that I wash my hair in the shower, I typically let it air dry down.

Mom Bun Styles

Below are some of my favorite ways to style a mom bun that isn’t just the same old top knot. Most of these styles only take a few minutes to do but look great on most hair types. They also look great with a few strands or stray hairs that hang around the face to frame it.

A classic trick for the messier looks is to use a bit of dry shampoo on your hair first. This creates a bit of volume and gives you that low maintenance messy hairstyle you are looking for.

I love the look of the upside down braided bun. While this is absolutely best to be done with two people I do have a few tricks to making it easier for one person to do. First, ALWAYS do this style with day old hair, freshly washed hair does not work well here.

Second, section off your hair first then braid it with your head upside down. Finally, rest your arms after braiding before you start the bun process.
