I am a mom, who works from home, and is LAZY when it comes to my beauty routine. Over the last year I have been trying to stick to a morning and nightly beauty routine because of changes my skin is going through.
I take my beauty very lightly, most days I don’t even wear makeup. My hair always ends up in a messy bun at the top of my head. I sometimes don’t get out of my pajamas.
While to you this may sound absolutely fantastic it really does a number on your self confidence.
I’m turning 35 this year so I probably shouldn’t be too surprised by some of the skin changes that are happening. Be it hormones, stress, or diet there have been a lot of things acting weird with my skin the past couple of years.
First, I had this really weird case of adult acne. Let me tell you I hit 25 and my skin was clear for about 8 years. Then all of a sudden I was getting breakouts again.
These weren’t small zits like I used to get either, I had straight up pimples. I found out that Tea Tree Oil actually made it worse after someone recommended it to me. Go figure.
This was number one on my list of changes that I needed to figure out and fast.
Second, my skin was suddenly dry. I have always had oily skin and now it just always feels dry. I had dry spots on my wrists and my face always felt tight.
I also had a dryer than normal scalp, when I used to have to wash my hair at least once every other day, now I could go 3 or 4 days. I was saving a lot on shampoo and conditioner but I flakes from my dry scalp annoyed me to no end.
My Hair Grew At A Glacial Pace
It took me two years to grow out an asymmetrical almost pixie length haircut. Hair growth had never been an issue for me. I used to grow out a bob in 4 months.
So when I was having a difficult time growing up my hair I really knew that my body was changing. I needed to make some big changes and fast.
There were a few steps that I took to combat all the weird changes. After confirming my health was fine, with the exception of the “work at home 20.” Well for me it was more than 20 lbs. I knew I needed a big change and fast.
In January, we decided to go on the plant based whole food diet. This meant we stopped eating ALL animal products. No milk, no eggs, no meat.
While the diet calls for a cut back on processed foods, we allow it from time to time for convenience purposes. Additionally, we will eat sushi about once every 2 or 3 months as a sort of cheat day.
This switch alone and suddenly the getting older aches and pains were far less than they used to be. The food was delicious and we were eating more of it. Any diet that doesn’t count anything is a diet I can do.
The big eye opener was losing 24 lbs in a little under 4 months, without exercising.
I also noticed a huge change in the frequency of breakouts. They were now only occurring during stressful times in my life instead of all the time.
Finally, I am trying to drink 5-6 refillable bottles of water each day. This is after my normal 2 cups of coffee in the morning, and a possible bedtime tea before bed. Yes, I pee A LOT.
Destress My Life
Now you are asking how a work at home mom of one could possibly be stressed out. Well, several things cause my stress actually.
First, I am a naturally stressful person. I have anxiety issues that I deal with on a daily basis so stressed is pretty much the only way I live.
Second, I work at home for myself. So while I can choose to take a day off here or there for some self care or to take care of errands the fact is, I work more than a full time job. I don’t get to leave my work at work, because my work is in my bedroom.
Third, before someone tells me to move my office to another bedroom. The office is in our bedroom because my mother in law lives with us. Enough said about that, most of you probably get it.
With this stress in my life I try to take time every single day to practice some mindfulness. I do this in the form of keeping a gratitude log in my bullet journal, writing, and meditating.
Get Into A Routine
The final thing I did to fix my beauty woes was to get into a beauty routine. I started using products that worked well and I created a routine to stick to.
Every morning and every night I wash my face with this cleanser. I have tried other cleansers and this was is the only one that didn’t dry out my skin and cause irritation.
It was my go to cleanser during my clear face age and it’s doing its job again this time around.
This is not going to be the only Elf product you see on this list. I absolutely love their products but it was this product that made me an Elf super fan. The Elf night cream moisturizer is what I use in the morning and again at night.
For the first time my face feels soft not greasy and it doesn’t feel tight like it used to either.
You are probably going to think I’m over moisturizing my face but I use this face oil every single night. At about 8 pm I wash my face apply the night cream, and this face oil. I let it rest for a couple of hours and go to bed.
I wake up in the morning and my skin actually has a glow to it. There is another benefit I’m noticing too. I’ve been using this product for three weeks and my worry lines in between my eyebrows are actually fading.
I have always had huge pores and they drive me crazy. While my pores are finally shrinking, with the work I’ve been putting in, the Elf Poreless Primer makes them almost disappear completely.
It’s the best primer I have used to smooth out my pores before applying makeup. When I do apply makeup this primer also makes it so it lasts all day.
I don’t need to trim as often, my hair is soft and strong, and the bottle lasts a long time.
I have super thick what used to be oily hair, so when my hair pretty much stopped growing I knew I needed to start using this product again. It’s repaired hair dye damage from the past and my hair has grown at about an inch a month for the past several months.
Late last year I decided I needed a big change to my hair. Not wanting to make the mistake of an asymmetrical cut again I instead dyed my hair. Galaxy colors, blue, then bright pink. Of course with each of these dye jobs I bleached my hair.
By the time I was over my fun hair dyes I needed some massive repair. After two uses of this hair mask, and using my normal shampoo and conditioner my hair looks like it’s never seen bleach in its life.
I’ve heard this works really well on curly hair but I can’t speak to that because my hair is naturally just wavy. But just in case you need to know.
I have not found a better dry shampoo and I have tried a lot. In my past life as a waitress dry shampoo was my best friend for those early morning opening shifts. Now I use it when I’m being lazy and don’t want to wash my hair.
It’s helped to keep funky colors longer, it’s saved me time, and it smells amazing too. Also unlike other dry shampoos that last about an hour, this one lasts all day long.
When you are looking to cover that stress pimple that pops up on your cheek or chin, this foundation will do it. Like I said I’m a huge Elf fan. I use only Elf makeup products at this point.
Back to the foundation. I have super pale skin but it’s not ivory. I am somewhere in between ivory and nude with pink undertones. For Elf I am “Snow.”
Word of caution using their Find My Shade, it put me at Natural which is too dark for my skintone. Make sure you pick your correct undertones too.
I have never had a foundation literally match my skin tone. I’ve always had to mix up my own but now I don’t need to. I have no lines and I often forget that I’m even wearing it.
Most contour palettes are WAY too dark for my skin tone. It wasn’t that big of a deal because I don’t often contour and highlight. Until I found this palette.
Now I don’t do heavy contouring but for a more natural look, this palette is the right one to use for a pale skin tone. The blushes don’t make me look like a creepy porcelain baby doll they blend nicely and give me a Natural Glow. Yea… I used the name to describe it.
The final product I absolutely need in my life is Hempz Lip Balm. One, my lips never chap. Two, it’s made with Hemp Seed Oil. Three, I can put this on once a day and never need to reapply because my lips just look that damn good.
Of course I just recently ran out so it’s been added to my next Amazon order. But it’s the most amazing lip balm I have ever used.
