It’s no secret that 2020 officially kicked my ass and made me a stronger woman. I finally accepted myself in all of my curvy, geeky, and beautiful glory. Part of that change came with finally embracing my love of brightly colored hair.
Towards the end of 2020 I decided that I needed a change. After a year and a half of leaving my hair untouched with color, I bleached it and dyed it bright pink. The color lasted for a couple of weeks which pink always does in my hair.
At that point I went bright purple and I’ve loved every minute of my new hair.
If you are seeking that same type of change in your life I have some wonderful ideas for you. But first let’s talk a little bit about hair care and dying your hair at home.
Should You Bleach Your Hair Yourself?
My answer to this is ALWAYS a firm no. You risk hair breakage, hair falling out, splotchy color, and loads of damage bleaching your hair on your own. It is always better for you to go to a professional to get your hair done.
I personally bleach my hair at home because I’m cheap like that. I also have thick hair that isn’t easily breakable. That being said, I am not a professional.
If you are going to bleach your hair at home please look up professional hair stylists on YouTube for tips and tricks to dealing with your exact hair texture.
Best Hair Care Products For Brightly Colored Hair
I personally use Biotera Ultra Color Care Shampoo and Conditioner. You can find these at Sallys Beauty Supply or on Amazon below.
As far as any other hair care products go you need to look for products that are free of sulfates and paraben. These chemicals can actually fade color faster so it’s important to make sure your hair care doesn’t have them if you are trying to have long lasting color.
If possible wash your hair only twice a week and wash it in cold water and avoid heat styling to keep the color going strong. That cold water trick is something I personally can’t do though so obviously just do what you can do.
Fun Hair Inspiration For 2021
Below are my top picks for those seeking a bit of a change in 2021. I will always recommend that you save examples to your phone to show your stylist and to get this done professionally. The color will last longer, there will be less damage, and the color will be more even.
Hot Pink with Dark Roots
If you have dark hair like I do this type of color option could be perfect for you. It allows for growth and so long as the pink (or whatever color you choose) lasts you can go a longer period between touch ups.
Deep Sea Green Hair
I’ve always wanted to try a deep sea green like this but I’m always afraid of what the fade would look like in my hair. One of these I’m just going to have to go for it because it really is beautiful.
Just Do The Underside
If you don’t want to color your entire head, this peek-a-boo look is a great option. Simply color a small section under layers of your natural hair. People would only see the color if your hair is up or while it’s swaying.
Purple was my choice for my hair this year. I wanted to keep it simple for now since I still can’t go to an actual hair salon and probably won’t be able to till later in 2021.
Make It Look Like A Sunrise
I love how bright this hair is and there is an appeal to having a bright and happy look for 2021. If you are attempting this at home I highly recommend having a friend help you accomplish this look.
The Sunflower Melt
I love sunflowers so this style immediately caught my eye. It’s a unique look that’s still bright and fun. It’s also great so you can wait longer between touch ups.
The Blue Phoenix
This really gives me a feeling of a phoenix rising so if you feel like you are rising out of the ashes of 2020 this might be the color to go with.
Go Bold Red
A beautiful bold red like this is on my list of colors I have to try in my hair. I love how bright it is and it looks amazing on most skin tones.
Pink and Teal
This fun mixture is a great way to get the best of two colors you love. Pink and teal are a perfect choice here but feel free to get creative and mix other color options too.
This hair reminds me of CandyLand and the rainbow of colors from the board game. Go with a blend of bright and pastel colors in small sections for a great rainbow look.
Hair Looks Like Fire
If you want something fun and bright, let your hair look like fire. It’s a bright color option that allows you to add highlights and lowlights for a beautiful blend.
Rock Green Curls
I love the brightness in these green curls. It’s the perfect look for a punk, grunge, or rocker style so if you just want to switch things up entirely this is a great look to try.
Become A Mermaid
This beautiful blend from dark blue all the way to seafoam green is just perfect. For those dreaming of laying on a beach instead of stuck indoors it’s the perfect look.
Hair Colors To Try This Year
With all these different options you have plenty to choose from. Will you make your hair look like a flame, stay cool as the ocean, or maybe go the full rainbow of colors? Whatever your heart desires, right?
Remember to use paraben and sulfate free shampoo and conditioner to make your hair color last longer. If you are going a solid color you can keep your hair brighter longer by mixing your hair dye with a conditioner once a week and deep conditioning your hair.
