Alright, I’m going to be flat out honest here. I avoided the Dalgona coffee craze for weeks and it finally got the best of me. The results were not what I expected, but I came up with a couple of dalgona coffee variations that I did enjoy.

When the viral Dalgona coffee craze first hit, I swore up and down I was not going to buy instant coffee just so I could make Dalgona. Why would I purchase one ingredient for one drink that I didn’t know I would even like? Especially since I have all of these iced coffee recipes that I know I enjoy.

However, it finally got the best of me. I’m like a cat, I’m curious, I just had to try this drink.

In my usual budget friendly fashion though I bought the cheapo Folgers Instant Coffee can. It was delivered the next day to my delight.

I ran into my kitchen, followed this recipe, plopped the ingredients in the stand mixer, because whipping by hand is not my thing, and made the fluffy coffee.

After snapping a quick picture, because nothing happens without picture proof on the internet, I mixed the dalgona into the milk and took my first sip.

Dalgona Coffee

Oh my god, bitter. My taste buds were expecting a sweeter taste than this and it felt like I was drinking an iced espresso.

Ok. It is what it is.

Except I had an entire can of instant coffee and I can’t let this go to waste.

So I got to testing.

Here are my results so far in finding different dalgona coffee variations that taste great so you can use up that can of instant coffee you bought.

The Coffee Milkshake Dalgona

The next day I decided to switch things up a bit. I wanted to cut the bitter a little bit and add more sweetness.

What I got was a coffee drink that looked exactly like the previous Dalgon coffee but tasted exactly like a milkshake. Super creamy, sweet, and the perfect dessert drink.

All I needed to do was add a splash of my favorite coffee creamer to the milk. By splash I do mean an actual splash, if you add too much it’ll get too sweet and take away from the coffee flavor in the dalgona.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 Tbsp Instant Coffee
  • 2 Tbsp Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Hot Water
  • Half a glass of milk of choice with ice
  • A splash of International Delight Cold Stone Creamery Sweet Cream

Directions:

  1. Add sugar to bowl of stand mixer with whisk attachment.
  2. Add instant coffee and hot water and swirl with spoon till combined.
  3. Whisk on high speed for 2-3 minutes or until foamy and caramel in color.
  4. Add ice and milk of choice to glass with a splash of Cold Stone Creamery Sweet Cream creamer.
  5. Scoop Dalgona on top of milk.
  6. Take picture for social media.
  7. Mix dalgona into milk with straw and enjoy.

The Chocolate Milk Dalgona Coffee

The next version I wanted to try was to use chocolate milk with my less bitter Dalgona whip. The results tasted like an iced mocha.

You absolutely got the coffee flavor with chocolate and it’s easy to make with ingredients you likely have in the house.

Of course, I can typically get the same flavor by just mixing my regular brewed coffee with milk, ice, and chocolate syrup.

Chocolate Milk Dalgona

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 Tbsp Instant Coffee
  • 2 Tbsp Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Hot Water
  • Half a glass of milk of choice with ice
  • 1 Tbsp Chocolate Syrup

Directions:

  1. Add sugar to bowl of stand mixer with whisk attachment.
  2. Add hot water and instant coffee and swirl with spoon till combined.
  3. Whisk on high speed for 2-3 minutes or until foamy and caramel in color.
  4. Add ice and milk of choice to glass with a tablespoon of chocolate syrup – being honest just squeeze until you have your preferred amount and mix.
  5. Scoop Dalgona on top of milk.
  6. Take picture for social media.
  7. Mix dalgona into milk with straw and enjoy.

I used an old glass spaghetti jar that I save and reuse for individual iced sweet teas that I make. Put the milk, ice, and chocolate syrup in the jar, close with the lid, and give it a good shake to mix. Then add your dalgona on top.

This will easily become one of my more favorite Dalgona choices as it’s not as sweet as the milkshake version and has a definite coffee flavor to it.

Mocha Dalgona

The mocha dalgona was not my favorite choice of the different types I tried.

It was pretty easy to make however, it did not whip up quite as quickly or as thick as normal Dalgona. Probably due to the added cocoa powder.

It tasted similar to the milkshake dalgona with hints of rich dark chocolate. Unfortunately, I’m a milk chocolate person not a dark chocolate person so while it was a fun experiment I probably won’t make it again.

However, if you are a dark chocolate fan, give this dalgona coffee variation a try.

Mocha Dalgona

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 Tbsp Instant Coffee
  • 2 Tbsp Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Hot Water
  • 1 tbsp of Cocoa Powder
  • Half a glass of milk of choice with ice
  • Splash of French Vanilla Coffee Creamer

Directions:

  1. Add sugar and cocoa powder to bowl of stand mixer with whisk attachment.
  2. Add hot water and instant coffee and swirl with spoon till combined.
  3. Whisk on high speed for 3-5 minutes or until foamy and caramel in color.
  4. Add ice and milk of choice to glass with a splash of French Vanilla coffee creamer.
  5. Scoop Dalgona on top of milk.
  6. Take picture for social media.
  7. Mix dalgona into milk with straw and enjoy.

Dalgona Coffee Variations

There were a couple of different variations that I tried during this testing process but the coffee milkshake dalgona is absolutely my favorite.

While these next variations are not for me, they may be right up your alley so give them a try and let me know what you think of them.

Pumpkin Spice Dalgona

  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ginger
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg

Add these spices to the Dalgona mixture and blend till whipped. Scoop the whipped topping to milk with a splash of vanilla creamer. Mix together and enjoy.

Cinnamon Caramel Dalgona

  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • Caramel Syrup

First, squeeze caramel syrup on the inside sides of a glass before adding the milk and ice. Add cinnamon to dalgona mixture and whip up. Top milk with whipped Dalgona, mix and enjoy.

Dalgona Coffee

While the original version of this recipe was not what I thought it would be, a couple of minor adjustments actually turned it into a favorite drink of mine.

It’s likely that I will purchase more Instant Coffee in the future just so I can continue to make it.
