I love using earth tones in decor. Earth tones are inviting, relaxing, and lend well to a lot of different decor styles. The best part about earth tones in decor is you can switch up your decor easily without removing the bulk of your furniture.
If you at first decide to go with a more bohemian look but decide to switch to contemporary you can switch out some art work, change your rug, and have a completely new look at little cost.
Earth tones bring the outside in to make your home feel more natural. Adding plants, using the right lighting, and fabrics can make or break your earthy home decor – so check out the examples of my earthly living room picks below.

Using Earth Tones In Home Decor
Earth tones are usually browns, beige’s, greens, and grays. When done right you can have a contemporary, modern, or bohemian room look well put together and be a relaxing environment.
The trick is to keep almost everything neutral but to have just a few things that stand out. So be it a burnt orange chair or pillow, a bright green plant, or a deep blue wall – your room will be an inviting and calm place.
Fabrics For Earthy Decor
For more modern styled rooms you will want a soft comfy fabric to soften up the harsh lines as you add earthy accents to the room. Think a large plush area rug or a large crocheted throw blanket.
If you are sticking with beige and neutral tones in your room throw in a couple of accent pillow in a deep green, a sienna, or lime green. This adds a bit of color and more earthy tones without completely taking away from the contemporary styling of your room.
Choosing fabrics with earthy southwest type patterns is another great way to add an earthy touch to your living space. Pick your patterns carefully though and if needed break them up with solid colors in between two different patterns.
How To Use Lighting In Earthy Decor
Lots of natural lighting is the best way to light up any room. However, if natural lighting in your home is at a minimum I have some neat ideas you can use.
Get lamps that have wood, stone, or gold bases and use daylight light bulbs to light up your room. There are great iron, gold, and even wood options for center lighting and wall lighting that you can install in your room too.
In dark rooms you will especially need bright lighting to bring in the feel of the earthy outdoors to your room. However, if your room is already bright with lots of light or bright colors use table lamps, tower lamps, and stand lamps to light your room. This allows you to better control the brightness and amount of lighting you need.
Earthy Living Room Decor Ideas
Below are some fantastic ways you can add a bit of earthiness to your home decor.
Greige Modern Living Room

This beautiful and simple design is perfect for the minimalist or more modern home decor. Using grey tones and leaf prints and a bit of stone makes the perfect earthy living room.
Mixing Stone And Soft Fabrics

If you already have stone in your living room adding a plush rug and some soft fabrics in your pillows can help to make the room feel warmer. The modern hard lines of the coffee table pair brilliantly with the rounded sofa cushions and the plush shag rug.
Using Reds and Oranges

Earthy tones aren’t always cool greens and blues. Using burnt sienna and oranges can brighten up a room and bring warmth to modern furniture.
Mix Textures and Patterns

Mixing patterns and textures really should be classified as a form of art. In this room they mixed metals, fabrics, woods, and different patterns. It’s extremely well done and isn’t overwhelming.
Use Bright Earth Tones

Unique lighting sources in wood paired with a bright evergreen and sunny yellow makes this room stand out. Having centerpiece furniture in yellow with a grey sofa and neutral flooring in an earthy pattern is perfect.
Mix Beige and Rose Colors

The dark wood console paired with beige in the wall really bring out some of the earthy feel to this room. The rose colors in the pillows, chair, and sofa all bring a relaxing floral feel without cluttering the room with fake or real flowers.
Beige, Brown and Lime Color Scheme

Beige and brown is a great color combination for contemporary and welcoming decor. Adding in touches of lime green really brings out the earthy feel and brings a unique look to the room.
Avocado and Chocolate

We aren’t looking at your grandmas kitchen with avocado anymore, now you can use avocado is a sleek design as an accent color on a chocolate wall. This is a great look for modern decor lovers who are looking to add a bit of comfort to their room.
Brick and Navy

If you have a brick wall and plenty of natural light source consider using a navy for your walls. Adding rich wood tones and plenty of greenery makes the room earthy and inviting while still embracing the richness of the red brick and deep walls.
Add Greenery

Adding plenty of greenery to any room can give it an earthy feel. While rich leather, woods, and sienna colors can be earthy on their own bright green plants break up the warm colors and make the room interesting.
Final Thoughts
Adding an earthy feel to your home is pretty easy and can be paired with most types of decor. I’ve seen everything from modern to bohemian rock earthy accents in their rooms.
The trick is to pick the right colors, the right fabrics, the right patterns, and if needed add some real plants to your room. If you have a black thumb like me there are great faux plant options that look incredibly realistic.

Thanks Crystal Fogleman! for sharing beautiful information with us
Sorry but the items you have chosen, are nothing like the expensive, classy looking furnishings and wall art of the original picture.
I can understand why you would say that and I appreciate the feedback. Sometime in the near future I’ll re-examine the room and see if I can find anything closer that still isn’t super expensive.
I updated the artwork and the sofa as I found some that are a bit more similar. Unfortunately, the overall price for this living room was increased, however I believe the higher price tag is worth having a room so similar to this style. I hope you enjoy the changes as much as I do.
Hi what is the name of the grey colour on the walls please as I want to buy it for my living room thank you
Hi Tony, I recommend contacting the original image owner to see if they know the color that was used on the walls. I also recommend just getting a bunch of grey and beige-grey paint samples from the hardware store. Monitors and screens can show a different color than what it actually is.
